This post has NOT been written to ‘bash’ Catholics (notice I did not say Catholicism), nor has it been written to support the Seventh Day Adventist beliefs. It has been written to help others better understand the Biblical position concerning all of YHWH’s Sabbaths.
The following link is to an article from “GotQuestions.org.” It is typical of the visible church’s position on the Sabbath, and it cites one of the most commonly abused passages used to defend that position. Unfortunately, this position (and thus, this post) is wrong! We will prove this to you in this class.
Does God require Sabbath-keeping of Christians?
In Colossians 2:16-17, the apostle Paul declares, “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” Similarly, Romans 14:5 states, “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.” These Scriptures make it clear that, for the Christian, Sabbath-keeping is a matter of spiritual freedom, not a command from God. Sabbath-keeping is an issue on which God’s Word instructs us not to judge each other. Sabbath-keeping is a matter about which each Christian needs to be fully convinced in his/her own mind.
SCRIPTURAL WARNINGS CONCERNING THE SABBATH
Exodus 20:8-11 (NASB)
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to YHWH your Elohim. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days YHWH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore YHWH blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 31:14 (NASB)
14 Therefore you are to keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.

You must keep the Sabbath
This command underscores the importance of the Sabbath as a covenant sign between God and His people. The Hebrew word for “keep” is “shamar,” which means to guard, protect, or observe. This implies an active, intentional effort to honor the Sabbath, reflecting its sacredness and the commitment required from the Israelites. The Sabbath is not merely a day of rest but a divine ordinance that signifies trust in God’s provision and sovereignty.
These Scriptural warnings directly contradict the position expressed in the “GotQuestions” post!
What’s more, one of the primary missions of ‘the prince who is to come’ is to change the Sabbaths!
