THE ROAD TO CONCORD 
I recall what I was taught in high school in about 1962. We we taught that the phrase “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” meant that no government entity could be allowed to show any respect for any religious belief system. I remembered that because it seemed odd to me at the time that the authors of the amendment would have used such strange wording to express the concept that we were taught. But we all accepted the claim with no independent research. We were not told about the many state establishments of religion that existed during and after the ratification on the Bill of Rights. It was many years before I discovered the actual meaning and intent of the “establishment clause”
