CONTRARY UNDERSTANDING

Not everyone accepts Dr. Heiser’s understanding of the Deuteronomy/Divine Council world view.  Here is just one such example:

MY COMMENTARY ON THIS VIDEO

(and most others like it)

First, the guest speaker in this video says he is not accusing Dr. Heiser of anything, then goes on to accuse Dr. Heiser of creating the Deuteronomy/Divine Council world view for personal gain and notoriety.   This is a form of ‘ad hominem,’ or ‘against the man.’

Next, this guest speaker claims — indirectly — that Dr. Heiser does not understand proper hermeneutics (proper translation).  He then goes on to explain that the rules of heremeutics are not his, indirectly infering his authority over Heiser’s.  This is the fallacy of ‘appeal to authority.’

The guest then claims that Dr. Heiser has inserted his incorrect understanding into genesis instead of allowing Scripture to speak for itself.  If I am to be charitable to this speaker, he is speaking out of ignorance (yet another fallacy).  In the process, the speaker commits still another fallacy — ‘straw man;’ when he states his opponents position incorrectly so as to make it easier for him to ‘refute’ Heiser.

The problem with this video — and all I have seen like it — is that they do not know what Dr. Heiser has actually said (or do not care to know).  Dr, Heiser actually addresses every point this speaker brings up, and Dr, Heiser does so in painstaking detail — so as to head-off objections exactly like this one.  The result is, this speaker does precisely what he claims Dr. Heiser has done and, in the process, he leads his audience astray.
