The following post is intended as a study guide for our congregation’s Sabbath Study class, as well as for those who join us via the internet. Our new study of prophecy will begin this Sabbath, Dec 28, 2024 and will be available on YouTube live at 11:00 AM CST, or for replay anytime after 12:00 PM CST.
Before you start in on any of the material I am providing, allow me to issue a few words of caution.
First, I am not a prophet, nor do I claim to possess any special revelation from YHWH or the Holy Spirit. I am merely offering to share my understanding of Scripture and the prophetic language, as well as how and why I cam to it.
Second, I believe no one person has been given all the pieces to YHWH’s grand design. Therefore, I not only admit I can be wrong, I expect I am. Furthermore, unless the Holy Spirit reveals my error(s), I’ll never be aware of them. The same applies to every source I am citing in the following documents. Please keep this in mind.
Finally, prophecy was provided for us,. but it does not belong to us. It is YHWH’s Prophecy, not ours. Keeping this and my previous words in mind, let us proceed with a brotherly love and with great patience for one another. I firmly believe it is possible to have two different but non-contradictory understandings of the same prophecy. Therefore, we should not divide the Body by fighting over any interpretation of YHWH’s Prophetic Word — so long as that interpretation does not clearly conflict with sound doctrine.
With this said, here are the files I have compiled for my own studies of the prophetic language.
UNDERSTANDING THE PROPHETIC LANGUAGE
And the following, which is a PDF of Ellis Skofield’s lecture notes on the subject of figurative language in Scripture.
